Creating Immersive Learning Environments with Mixed Media

David Jakes, Glenbrook South High School, Chicago, IL

This session provides participants with an understanding of how to design

interactive and immersive learning environments by blending together a wide

variety of different online media. To provide a foundation for the day, the session

begins with a discussion of instructional best practice and how new and emerging

trends and views on literacy potentially impact what classrooms and learning can

look like. Participants will have an opportunity to explore media rich resources

such as Google Streetview, the various Tubes (YouTube, DNATube, and TimeTube

among others), and Flickr to obtain visual resources for lesson design. Participants

will then learn how these resources, along with primary source content and more

traditional online resources such as Web sites, can be combined together with

contemporary Web 2.0 learning platforms such as wikis and Google Earth.

Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to construct and share a mixed

media lesson based on their curriculum. The session will conclude with a

discussion about assessing student learning in this type of environment, as well as

how mixed media can be used to address state learning standards.

Universal Design for Learning – Evidence-based Practice and Gathering the Evidence

Michael Jabot, SUNY Fredonia

This workshop addresses two primary needs in transforming learning using

technology tools: (a) Too often, technology is not an embedded solution to work

with struggling learners; and (b) even more often, we do not use available tools to

measure the impacts of our interventions with struggling learners.

SATPM13

skills and efficiency."

SATPM14

Do You See What I Mean?: Visual Literacy in a Web 2.0 World

Nancy Sharoff, Ellenville Central School

To be 'literate' in today's world is no longer a matter of being fluent in reading,

writing, and arithmetic. Today, our students must be equipped with 21st century

skills. One of these components is Visual Literacy, which is the ability to interpret,

use, and create images…in ways that advance thinking, decision making,

communication, and learning." (EnGauge, 2004) 83% of our learning occurs

visually, while only 11% of our learning occurs auditory. Retention via auditory

means is only 20%, whereas retention via auditory & visual means is 50%-70%. As

educators we need to ensure that our instruction incorporates visual components."

SATPM15

Collecting Podcasts for Use in the Classroom

Cartography on the Cutting Edge

David Jakes, Glenbrook South High School, Chicago, IL

Almost any subject can be studied within a geographical context. In this workshop,

explore the application of a variety of mapping tools, including Google Earth and

Google Maps, to student learning. We'll begin by developing a framework for

developing cartography lessons, and test and fine-tune that framework with an

evaluation of "best practice" examples. Participants will then have the opportunity

to learn how to create content in both Earth and Maps and then apply that

understanding to the creation of a lesson that utilizes the participant-developed

framework, various types of online content and is based on the curriculum that

they teach. Finally, participants will learn how to access online resources on

cartography and use those resources for continued exploration, development of

lessons, and embedded professional development.
